Questions to ask your CSA farmer?
Spring is CSA sign-up season for everyone around the country. As you search for a CSA, LocalHarvest recommends you ask some basic questions before signing up. This is important, because members need to have realistic expectations to have a satisfactory CSA experience.
How long have you been farming? We are a 5th generation farmers.
How long have you been doing a CSA? 2012 will be our fourth CSA season. We are excited to see customer's familiar faces back on the farm!
Are there items in your box grown by other farms, and if so, which farms? While the majority of our produce is grown by us, we do contract out some of our fruit and vegetable growing. This allows us to spread out the risk for our members.
How did last season go? Last season went very well. In fact, every season has gone well. Again, this speaks to our farm's decision to mitigate risk by spreading our growing out over multiple farms.
Do you offer anything other than vegetables and fruit? Yes, we are pleased to offer our members a wide selection of local meats, coffee, bread, honey, and eggs. We have partnered with some of the area's finest operations to bring you the highest quality goods to add to your basket.
If you have any questions or suggestions about the upcoming CSA season, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Cully Community Market

We're excited to be a part of Cully Community Market this Summer. Located at 42nd and Killingsworth in Portland, the market starts Sunday June 3rd from 10am - 2pm.
Cully Community Market’s mission is to make healthful food available to an economically challenged, diverse and proud community; to bring neighbors together; and to create a place where people can sell or trade the things they grow and create in the neighborhood. Their outdoor market is a community gathering space, nurturing cross-cultural relationships and economic opportunity in the neighborhood
Sprouting
The greenhouses are starting to show signs of life. These little sprouts will grow up to be Genovese basil. It is the most popular basil, in no small part because it is delicious. This week we also ordered flower seeds.
Expect to see a beautiful assortment of sunflowers, zinnias, and many other beautiful cut flowers in your baskets this year!
Planting has begun
With a week of nice weather, we should be able to start getting some seeds in the ground this week. We were excited to have our sweet snap pea seeds arrive, and we are even more excited to get them in the ground. The hoop houses have been cleaned out, and we are ready to get peppers and tomatoes started for the upcoming season. We had an abundance of tomato starts last year, and probably will again this year. So, if you want to grow a few plants at your place, please let us know if you will be interested in buying starts. In addition to the tomatoes, we should have pepper and cucumber starts available as well.
Remember, signing up for our CSA is as easy as visiting the CSA tab at the top of this page!
